Powell was the first National Director of the Hoop Shoot. A member of Peru, Ind., Lodge No. 365, he volunteered with the program for 24 years. In 1971, Powell traveled the country to promote the Hoop Shoot as a national program. He became National Director in 1972 and served in that role until 1979. Powell is the namesake for the Getty Powell Award, which is awarded to the top overall boy and girl scorer.
