In 1946, Hise was walking by a playground in Corvallis, Oregon, when he saw a group of kids playing basketball. He noticed the kids on the sidelines who weren’t competing. Hise stopped the game and lined the kids up for a free throw contest—the beginning of the Hoop Shoot. The program’s founder, Hise later served as the Elks National President in 1969-70.
